Daedalus, Linear Tube Audio, LamizatOr, WyWires; All Reference – CAF 2018

By | November 15th, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

This is a system I could listen to every day and twice on Sundays. Which is exactly what I did at Capital Audiofest. On Friday, I poked my head in for a listen, Saturday, much of the same. Sunday morning I was there first thing to gather some final impressions of the system and snap some photos when I was called away for an urgent show-going responsibility. So I finally return on for my “twice” listen on Sunday, along with some photos — and I am noticing as the show is winding down, that the Daedalus, Linear Tube Audio and LamizatOr room is still rather busy.Read the full article

Bigger and better
than ever, this years Expo Hall at AXPONA was alone worth the cost of admission. Vendors were pulling all the stops with their displays and demo exhibits. Traffic was consistent throughout the weekend, and I imagine the Expo Hall will be a popular destination for both attendee and exhibitor next year.
On with the show!

Lampizator and Daedalus – AXPONA 2018

by Rafe Arnott

The archeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun buried deep in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. The tomb was, for all intents, and purposes, intact, and became legend for the quantity of golden treasure that was buried within.

Casting my eyes upon the LampizatOr Pacific DAC ($29,995 USD) in all its splendour at AXPONA I was reminded of Carter’s story of discovery (and subsequent curse) as I gazed upon my reflection in its glossy, golden-brass casework, and marvelled at the compliment of 300B, 5U4G, and 6H6P tubes sprouting from its top like a crown.… Read the full article

RMAF 2017: Cables from Skogrand for under a grand

By | November 18th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

I’ve found many things to like about Skogrand Cables over the last three years, mainly being their sound, no you shouldn’t expect The French Laundry when swapping out one great cable for another, but in listening to many Daedalus, ModWright, Vpi Industries systems before, with either WyWires or Skogrand cables of the past, I’ve come to know what to expect from the equipment trio when it comes to cable changes.

Rocky Mountain Audio Fest is the second time I’ve had the chance to hear Skogrand’s Vivaldi series of speaker cables and interconnects.

RMAF 2017: Best In Show

This year dawned with plenty of questions facing the high-end audio industry. The most pressing were: Would the U.S. economy hold up, allowing manufacturers and retailers to stay afloat? Would vinyl continue its revival, possibly enticing young people into a hobby that’s in danger of aging out? And, would the recent growth in the show circuit create too much of a good thing?

That third question was still hanging in the air as September arrived and the last two of the record seven major domestic gatherings for 2017 were scheduled to go off within weeks of each other, putting a strain on the finances and staff of audio companies and creating decisions for potential out-of-town attendees.… Read the full article

A photojournal by Eric Franklin Shook

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, proving again that there is more than one way to skin a cat. Axpona is to me an ensemble interpretation of beauty, ruggedness, finesse and power; all tangled in a whirlwind of song. Masterful as the grace of a ballerina, don’t let these good looks fool you, there is power beneath the skin. Today I want to highlight the sexy designs this industry has to offer. Let’s take a walk…

AXPONA 2017: Daedalus goes deeper with new 10-inch woofer

By | June 5th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

The last time I listened at length to a pair of Daedalus Audio speakers at a show, they were flanked by the company’s custom subwoofers.

At AXPONA, I again was impressed by the low frequencies coming from a Daedalus design; this time the new floor-standing Apollo ($14,250 a pair). As my aging eyes adjusted to the dim light, however, I noticed something: no subs.

“I’ve always wanted to do a speaker with a 10-inch woofer,” Daedalus owner and designer Lou Hinkley told me.… Read the full article

AXPONA 2017: Putting eyeballs and eardrums on the latest gear

By | April 22nd, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

If high-end audio manufacturers harbor many serious concerns about the state of the industry, you wouldn’t know it from the long list of new products that went on display Friday at AXPONA in Chicago.

The annual, three-day Audio Expo North America kicked off with crowded elevators, congested hallways and more than 400 exhibitors seeking to catch the ears of the stereo-minded.

Indeed, after a hectic eight hours of AXPONA Day 1, I was exhausted, but also convinced there’s plenty of life left in this hobby.… Read the full article

Capital Audiofest 2016: Daedalus goes BorderPatrol, stirring wood

I suppose it shouldn’t have been surprising to see, but the team-up between two American-Made brands was unexpected — and delightfully so.

Daedalus loudspeakers, a visually striking example of modern design meets retro styling, paired with BorderPatrol electronics, a visually striking example of modern design meets retro styling. Like I said, I should have seen that one coming.

A Daedalus loudspeaker is iconic — all-natural all-wood cabinets. No veneers. No paint. Just a towering sculpture of nature’s finest, outfitted almost PA-like with high-sensitivity drivers.… Read the full article
