AudioLabs researcher receives KlarText Award

Yesterday, Christof Weiß, who works at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen, received the KlarText Award – the Klaus Tschira Foundation’s prize for science communication. His winning entry in the Computer Science category was entitled Das ist Haydn. Ganz sicher! and explains in an easy to understand manner the key ideas and results of his doctoral thesis about algorithms that can recognize musical styles. Christof Weiß, born in Regensburg, Germany, in 1986, studied physics at the University of Würzburg and composition at the University of Music Würzburg.… Read the full article

Siegfried Fößel Appointed Head of Technology Study Program at HFF Munich

Dr. Siegfried Fößel, who leads the Moving Picture Technologies department at Fraunhofer IIS, has been appointed as the new head of the Technology study program at the University of Television and Film (HFF) Munich. Alongside his industry duties, he will be joining the department chair Prof. Peter C. Slansky in advancing current developments in this HFF department. Prof. Peter C. Fraunhofer IIS MPEG-H Authoring Plugin Now Available for Download

At the 51st annual IBC Show in Amsterdam from September 14-18, 2018, Fraunhofer IIS is proud to announce the availability of the MPEG-H Authoring Plugin. TV broadcast professionals can download the plugin, which enables the creation of MPEG-H Audio scenes, from the Fraunhofer IIS website. MPEG­-H Audio supports several use cases for interactivity of object­based audio, such as defining of switching groups or presets for selection by the end-user. MPEG-H metadata contains all relevant information for reproduction and rendering in arbitrary reproduction layouts: in­formation about the audio components inside the bit stream and their hierarchical structure, as well as restrictive metadata by which the content creator can allow or limit the interactive possibilities that can be accessed by the consumer.… Read the full article

MPEG-H 3D Audio Becomes 3GPP’s Standard Audio Codec for Video Streaming over Mobile Networks

3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), the united standards body for the global mobile industry, has approved a technical specification for 360° video streaming in its work item “VRStream”. It will be included in 3GPP release 15, the most recent 3GPP release and the first one to specify 5G. The recommended audio format for use in VRStream services is the MPEG OMAF 3D Audio Baseline Profile, based on MPEG-H Audio. Among other things, the VRStream specification defines audio and media profiles for mobile operators that want to offer fully immersive 360° video services cost-effectively on a broad range of mobile devices connected over the most advanced mobile networks, such as upcoming 5G networks.… Read the full article

xHE-AAC and MPEG-D DRC Mandatory for Android Pie Devices

Earlier this month, Google announced the general availability of Android 9 “Pie”, along with the first devices incorporating the latest release of Google’s mobile operating system. Android Pie comes with a string of major upgrades in terms of audio playback, since the Extended High-Efficiency AAC (xHE-AAC) audio codec and MPEG-D DRC Loudness and Dynamic Range metadata, both substantially developed by Fraunhofer IIS, are mandatory components of the operating system. The xHE-AAC implementation used by default in Android Pie has been provided by Fraunhofer IIS and is available as part of the FDK2 AAC Codec Library for Android.… Read the full article

ORPHEUS – the Movie

The ORPHEUS project, pioneering the development of an end-to-end object-based media chain for audio content, was officially concluded in May 2018, when the second and final ORPHEUS workshop was held at Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT) in Munich. There, the ten project partners presented their findings to an auditorium filled with more than 100 broadcast and audio professionals from all over the globe. Successful Demonstration of Interactive Audio Streaming using MPEG-H Audio at Norwegian Broadcaster NRK

by Rupert Brun | Norwegian public broadcaster NRK and Fraunhofer IIS have successfully conducted the first end-to-end real-time streaming trial in the Nordic region of Next Generation Audio (NGA) with interactive features of MPEG-H Audio. Representatives from Norwegian broadcasters, technology companies and other invited experts had the opportunity to enjoy the 2018 Football World Cup matches from Russia using interactive audio, in the NRK premises in Oslo, Norway. During the demonstration the users had the option to switch between Norwegian, Danish and Swedish TV commentaries as well as NRK’s radio commentary and select their preferred language.… Read the full article

SBS Conducts Worldwide First Regular Broadcast with Immersive and Interactive Sound Powered by MPEG-H Audio

The opening game of the 2018 Football World Cup in Russia will mark the world’s first regular broadcast with immersive and interactive audio: The South Korean television and radio network company SBS will transmit this match live in Ultra-High Definition (UHD) based on the ATSC 3.0 standard, utilizing the advanced features of Fraunhofer’s MPEG-H TV Audio System, immersive sound and interactive audio. In addition to the opening match, Russia vs. Saudi Arabia, SBS plans to broadcast more than 30 matches during the 2018 Football World Cup with immersive and interactive audio – including the final and all games of the South Korean national team.… Read the full article

Fraunhofer’s xHE-AAC Audio Codec Software Extends Native AAC Support In Android P For Better Quality At Low Bitrates

With the release of the Android P Developer Preview 3 (Beta 2), Fraunhofer IIS announces a new version of the popular FDK library which has been a part of Android since 2012. The FDK2 version will bring several new technologies to Android OEMs, service providers and developers, including xHE-AAC for video and music delivery down to 12kbit/s for stereo sound and MPEG-D DRC dynamic range control for better listening in noisy environments. The latest version of the MPEG AAC audio codec, xHE-AAC, will extend the usable stereo bitrate range of AAC – from as low as 12 kbit/s up to 300 kbit/s, enabling subscription video on demand (SVOD) and streaming music distributors to globally offer a better, more reliable consumer experience over congested networks and particularly in regions where consumers still rely on 2G or 3G connections.… Read the full article
