REVIEW – Boenicke W5 SE Loudspeakers

By | August 28th, 2018|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , , , |

Made in Switzerland the Boenicke W5SE are a very small speaker with a reasonably high price tag of £4595. Stuart and Linette Smith take a listen.

When Ian Ringstead who reviews for Hifi Pig heard that we had got these diminutive speakers (they ae only 2.8L in volume) from Swiss manufacturer Boenicke, he was to say the least a little bit green with envy commenting that they were his favourite small speaker when he has heard them at shows and demonstrations.

REVIEW – Audiovector QR1 Standmount Loudspeakers

By | May 5th, 2017|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , , |

Audiovector are based in Denmark and produce a wide range of loudspeakers? Here Dominic March takes a listen to their £750 QR1 standmount with ribbon tweeter.

“For those of you that are not familiar with the Audiovector brand, they are in fact one of Denmark’s leading speaker manufacturers, up there with the likes of Dali, Dynaudio and B&O, headquartered in Copenhagen.

Audiovector also provide what I think is a rare and rather unique service for it’s customer base and that is to offer a full upgrade service for your existing base level speakers to the higher specified version of the same model…”

REVIEW – RDacoustic Evolution Loudspeakers

By | April 13th, 2017|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , , , |

RDacoustic are based in the Czech Republic and we first came across them at High End Munich where their Evolution loudspeakers were being powered by KR Audio amplifiers being fed by a 440 Audio turntable…all Czech brands. The Evolution loudspeakers are a single driver design using a backloaded horn and cost from €9990.

“The Evolutions are an imposing back loaded horn loudspeaker standing 180 cm high, weigh 75Kg a piece and come in a variety of real wood finishes, embellished on the front baffle with artificial leather; again the customer can choose the colour.

REVIEW – Trafomatic Belus Poweramp

By | November 17th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , |

Trafomatic is a relatively recent addition to the high-end hifi fraternity and perhaps best known for the £100,000 Elysium monoblocs. This is a Serbian company that exudes quality, detail and perfection.  The Belus power amplifier up for review here might not be as expensive as the Elysium, but at a more attainable £3250 this is no less a product says Janine Elliot.

“First impressions on listening were of class. This was a smooth operator with guts and reserve. Music sounded very real and that valve really fed an honest sound, but perhaps it was just too honest”

Music First Audio Baby Reference V2 TVC Preamplifier Review

By | September 15th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , |

The Baby Reference V2 is the latest incarnation of this British company’s TVC preamplifier and costs £6120 in standard form. Stuart Smith tries it out for Hifi Pig.

For the last few months since the Baby reference arrived I’ve been using it with a pair of Merrill Thor Class D power amplifiers, our Avantgarde Duo XD loudspeakers with the front end being the Lampizator Big 7 DAC being fed by files from the computer. Cables have been a mix of Tellurium Q, Vermouth Audio and Chord Company, with power conditioning via a Lab 12 gordian unit.

Roksan TR-5 S2 Loudspeakers Now Avaialble

By | May 14th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , |

The Roksan TR-5 S2 loudspeakers that Hifi Pig reviewed sometime ago are now available for £995 in the UK. roksan_loudspeaker_review_2

Roksan_loudspeaker_review_3

The design innovations focus around a new crossover and an improved internal layout to produce a more controlled, faster sound. The crossover uses improved and modified electrical components and large low-impedance air core voice-coils on a meticulously-designed double- sided PCB. Meanwhile, the cabinet internals have been re-designed and feature a high-absorption internal damping material to eliminate unwanted resonances or standing waves. The end-result is a sound-stage that’s wide, deep and articulate while maintaining its musical core.

Roksan TR-5 S2 Loudspeaker Review

By | April 15th, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , |

The £995 TR-5 S2 loudspeaker has already been extensively reviewed by other hifi magazines over the years since its introduction, so why is Hifi Pig reviewing them now I hear you ask?  Dominic Marsh will explain.

“The real star of this show is without doubt the ribbon tweeter that Roksan have incorporated into the design and sets it well above the herd.  Ribbon tweeters are not cheap and I would imagine specifying these for a sub-£1,000 speaker was not a decision taken lightly by Roksan, nor was having a piano gloss finish as standard either, but that is not within the remit of my review to ponder over and I set to task myself how it sounded as a package.”

Review – 3 Square Audio Translator Loudspeakers

By | March 31st, 2016|Categories: Hifipig|Tags: , , , |

3 Square is a small new company based in the UK, their first product is a floorstanding loudspeaker constructed out of Baltic pine ply wood and costing £2500. Ian Ringstead takes a listen.

“In my many years of listening to hifi I have learnt to be wary of initial impressions and make quick assumptions. Sometimes a product or system can instantly grab you and retain that magical quality, but on the flipside an initial impressive sound can soon become wearing on the ears and make me want to switch the system off.
