Los Angeles Audio Show 2018 Cancelled

LAAS-CANCELLED

LAAS-CANCELLED

The 2018 Los Angeles Audio Show has been cancelled, and refunds will be issued immediately according to a personal, and emotional statement released late Wednesday night by the show’s organizer Marine de Rogez-Presson. What this means exactly for the fate of the show in 2019 still seems to be determined, but it looks as if there may be only one LA-area show – The Home Entertainment Show, June 1-3, 2018 at the Marriott Irvine Spectrum Hotel – for the foreseeable future.… Read the full article

U.S. Audio Shows in 2018: Bigger, Better, More

By | February 7th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

coverdeep-1

It appears 2018 is going to be another hectic year for U.S. audio shows. One California event that was postponed last year is set to return — less than a week before another major show in the same city — and several others are upgrading to new venues.

The Home Entertainment Show (T.H.E. Show) cancelled its planned September 2017 event at the eleventh hour, but president Maurice R. Jung told me this week his show will return on June 1-3 in Irvine.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Ryan, Auralic create vivid soundscapes

It’s common for the first impressions of a speaker to center on its performance across the frequency range – bass slam, midrange texture, treble purity. Then, almost as an afterthought, comes imaging.

laas9Reviewers do it (me included, oftentimes). Potential buyers do it. Your friends do it when they come over to listen. But long-term, I contend that what will make you hold on to a pair of speakers – if they have no significant faults – is exceptional imaging. Being able to pinpoint players across a wide soundstage and simultaneously hear deep into the room or studio is, once you hear it, difficult to do without.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: The Voice That Is launches a Tidal wave

Doug White of The Voice That Is.

You can say two things for certain about high-end audio dealer Doug White: He has terrific ears and is very discerning.

White runs The Voice That Is, a Philadelphia-based shop. He is a fixture at most of the big shows, and is one of those exhibitors you can count on to consistently be making a good sound. In White’s case, it’s usually a great sound.

I visited the Voice room on Saturday at the Los Angeles Audio Show and auditioned White’s system, which featured Tidal Audio speakers and electronics.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: ATC brings pro sound into your home

I’ve long heard good reports about ATC speakers and electronics, but never seemed to be in the right place for a substantial demo.

I finally corrected that situation at the Los Angeles Audio Show, where Lone Mountain Audio was showing ATC’s SCM 50 passive tower loudspeakers ($20,999 USD), P2 amplifier ($4,599 USD) and CA2 Mk. 2 preamp ($2,999 USD).

ATC, based in the UK, is an interesting company. Its history goes back to 1974 when engineer and working musician Billy Woodman created a business to manufacture custom drive units for the professional sound industry.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017 Video: The High End Zone, Perfect8 Technologies, Ypsilon Electronics

Through the Looking Glass.

laas9This is the Lewis Carroll sequel to the much more famous Alice in Wonderland. In it Alice again acquires entry to a magical world, this time by climbing through a mirror. The title instantly sprang to mind after spending a few minutes in the High End Zone room at the Los Angeles Audio Show looking through a pair of the transparent-glass cabinet Perfect8 Technologies Point Mk III loudspeakers being driven by Ypsilon Electronics amplification, and being fed the ones and zeros from an Aurender W20 music server.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Volti’s ‘compact’ Rival speaks with big voice

The Volti Rival.

laas6

I had to chuckle a little to myself when Volti Audio rolled out what it described as its “compact” loudspeaker at the Los Angeles Audio Show.

Calling the new model small, however is kind of like describing a Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan as “entry level.” Even with that car, you’re still getting plenty of luxury.

It’s much the same with the Rival ($7,900 to $11,900 USD/pair, depending on options). It’s still a Volti, and you’re still looking at a lot of speaker.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: D’Agostino muscle, Audio Research glow, YG finesse – an intoxicating mix

Hypnotic dials.

Have you ever been to a rock festival and started imagining your dream lineup in a hoped-for ending jam? What would it sound like to hear singer X with guitarist Y and drummer Z?

laas3Thoughts similar to that pop into my head as I approach each major audio show. You can never tell which brands are going to band together. Some companies tend to have long-term personal friendships or at least business ties that result in them making music together at almost every event, where others seem to change partners frequently.Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Vehement Audio off to auspicious start with Brezza Forte speakers

The Brezza Forte 3-way loudspeaker.

It’s fairly common to run into one or two new companies each time I cover a major stereo event. What’s unusual, though, is to meet some fresh audio entrepreneurs on their first official day in business.

laas2Yet, that’s just what I encountered at the Los Angeles Audio Show. Kentucky-based Vehement Audio Group was launching not only itself as a brand, but also its debut product, the Brezza Forte loudspeaker.

The Brezza Forte ($15,995 USD/pair) is a contemporary-styled, three-way floor-stander that features a baffle made of a solid-surface product often used for kitchen countertops.… Read the full article

LA Audio Show 2017: Upscale Audio’s PrimaLuna Dialogue HP integrated much more than ‘good for the money’

Veritable bevy of valves.

If you run into a friendly, middle-aged man at an audio show calling himself “Uncle Kevvy,” you can be sure that nearby there will be two things: lots of tubes and good sound.

laas1He may not be your real uncle, but Kevin Deal will treat any tube lover like family. The owner of Upscale Audio eats, sleeps and dreams about valves and has an affinity for audiophiles who share his passion.

When not selling a broad range of new equipment from his large Upland, California-based store, his idea of a vacation is going overseas and rummaging in dusty warehouses for overlooked boxes of new-old-stock tubes.… Read the full article
