“The truth is, Andrew, I never really had a Charlie Parker. But I tried…and that’s more than most people ever do. And I will never apologize for how I tried.”

–Terence Blanchard

By now I assume that most jazz aficionados have watched Damien Chazelle’s 2014 film Whiplash. I’m a fan, especially of the final heart-pounding musical sequence, but after watching it for the first time I came away with a couple of interesting questions. First, are university jazz programs really that heated, competitive and intense?… Read the full article

Legacy – AXPONA 2018

The long end of the Schaumburg Convention Center houses three large expo halls with some pretty good size individual rooms on the second floor. These good sizes are prefect for manufacturers that need a little more space to show off more than one rig, or a wider range of product than just a single pair of awesome speakers. Its safe to say that these rooms, named after things like Nirvana, Euphoria and Utopia indeed contained some of their namesake for the inhabitants within.… Read the full article

There are over 160 rooms and exhibits here at Axpona. Making this event the largest audio show in North America. For some this can be overwhelming and cause a bit of anxiety. But have no fear, the Part-Time Audiophile Dream Team of journalists, personalities, and humorists are ready to be your guide.

Just one part of the Paragon duo of rooms at the show, Doshi Audio had us befuddled at how well his new seventy-five watt per channel amplifier was handling the load presented by the Wilson speakers.Read the full article

This year dawned with plenty of questions facing the high-end audio industry. The most pressing were: Would the U.S. economy hold up, allowing manufacturers and retailers to stay afloat? Would vinyl continue its revival, possibly enticing young people into a hobby that’s in danger of aging out? And, would the recent growth in the show circuit create too much of a good thing?

That third question was still hanging in the air as September arrived and the last two of the record seven major domestic gatherings for 2017 were scheduled to go off within weeks of each other, putting a strain on the finances and staff of audio companies and creating decisions for potential out-of-town attendees.… Read the full article

Raven, Legacy, Metronome: The Little Show At The Big Show – RMAF 2017

Idealized Synergy Takes A Back Seat To The Audio Show

The story surrounding this pairing of Legacy Audio speakers and Raven Audio electronics has been solely focused on synergy for quite some time now. For the second time this year I could (along with everyone else) beat that same drum. But I won’t.

Legacy’s Bill Dudleston has continually put forth a demo room that should be on your short list of must-see exhibits. Almost mimicking the audio show itself, Legacy / Raven rooms are often quite large, contain four or more systems, and have more staff on hand to answer questions and demo gear than you could imagine.… Read the full article

Best of 2016 and Product of the Year

best-2016So here we are again. Somehow, the year has turned, we’re all facing yet another New Year, and yet no one is running through the streets screaming about “the end of meaning”, “the inexorable march toward extinction”, or why Kanye West and Sarah Palin are still appearing in the news.

This list is not meant to be exhaustive. There were, to be frank, a lot of great new things on the market in 2016. Which is awesome. And if you ask me quietly, at the end of a long day while I’m attempting to unkink my neck, my hands and my soul with a tasty adult beverage in hand and a startlingly large dog snoring across my lap, I might offer that the horn o’ plenty that is this new Golden Age of Audio is almost enough to offset the shrinking, shuddering horror that 2016 has turned out to be.… Read the full article

RMAF 2016 Preview: Getting High on Hi-Fi in the Rockies

By | October 6th, 2016|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

rmaf-2016-200x200Stereo nutjobs have one last opportunity this year to binge out on more than 150 systems gathered under one roof. Yes, it’s time to head to Denver for the venerable Rocky Mountain Audio Fest.

The high-end equipment orgy, now in its 13th year, runs Oct. 7-9 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center. More than 400 exhibitors are expected, and they’ll be bringing gear ranging from budget models to borderline-insane assaults on the state of the art.

For quite a while, RMAF was the two-channel enthusiast’s primary major alternative to the increasingly video-, communications- and gadget-focused Consumer Electronics Show.… Read the full article
