Product of the Year Awards 2017: Accessories

AudioQuest Conductive Fiber Record Brush $19.95 This new and improved version of AudioQuest’s ubiquitous carbon-fiber wonder answers the burning question: “Does the original AudioQuest Record Brush provide a ‘good electrical path between the fibers and the handle?’”Apparently the answer is: “No,” according to AudioQuest’s Bill Low. Enter AudioQuest’s Conductive Fiber Record Brush, which has “ideal conductivity from the Carbon Fibers.” On first acquaintance, the only change JV noted was that the brush feels different (lighter and a bit flimsier) than the original.… Read the full article

Q&A with Joe Lavrencik of Critical Mass Systems

What ignited your interest in the high end? Did it come from the music side or the electronics side? The music side, for sure. I played jazz, classical, and rock guitar, and piano. I took lessons twice a week and tried to practice about six hours a day. Classical guitar was the best because the instrument is so textural and responsive to touch. For some reason, I clearly remember the sound and feel of the interplay between musicians. There was a purity of tone and timing that to this day I try to help bring out in reproduced music.… Read the full article

2017 Editors’ Choice: Interconnects and Speaker Cables Part 2

2017 Editors' Choice: Interconnects and Speaker Cables Part 2

MIT StyleLine SL 8 Interconnect and SL 9 Speaker Cables $499/1m pr. interconnect; $799/8' pr. speaker: RD always equated MIT (Music Interface Technologies) audio cables with crazy-unreachable prices, but now there’s the new entry-level StyleLine Series. The SL 8/SL 9 pairing offered a very neutral top-to-bottom balance, allowing RD to indulge in the detail-fest that makes the sport of the high end so much fun. Mouth sounds, the sonic signatures of the microphones, the “sound” of the recording studio—all came through clear as day.… Read the full article

Into the white: Atacama Nexus 6i, Devialet Treepod speaker stands

Misnomer. Bookshelf speakers – they’re anything but. Just because a compact loudspeaker is small enough to sit next to James Joyce and Kurt Vonnegut doesn’t mean it should, especially when attempting to optimise the speaker’s sound quality.

Putting a pair of ‘bookshelf’ loudspeakers on stands can better isolate them from unwanted environmental vibrations, reduce the amount of sound transmitted to/through the floor and gives the listener better control over the distance between speaker plane and front wall. Many loudspeakers, especially those with rear-firing ports benefit from a little breathing space.… Read the full article

Tokyo International Audio Show: Julie Mullins’ Highlights

When it comes to high-end audio events, the Tokyo International Audio Show, like many aspects of Japanese culture, is in a class all its own. It starts with its magnificent venue, the Tokyo International Forum’s main building, which sets the tone for the relative tranquility of the show (aside from some jam-packed rooms, but even then the attendees remained quite courteous). It’s an architectural marvel of glass and steel with a vertiginous atrium—and seven floors of remarkably well-soundproofed demo rooms, with none of that sonic bleed-through characteristic of so many hotels and other show spaces.… Read the full article

Stillpoints Ultra 5 and Ultra 6 Isolation Devices

In the high end, tweaks do not always enjoy a high reputation. The term itself suggests a mere fiddling with the sound rather than a substantial improvement. Add to that a proliferation of products, not a few of which carry the tag “magic” or the like, and you can quickly end up a jaded audiophile. I know. Years ago, I was headed down that path. As an audio newbie, I was fascinated by just about every product that promised a potent change for the better to my Snell E/IV loudspeakers and Conrad-Johnson gear.… Read the full article
