AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

“The basic idea here was to see what we could put together for $10,000,” Shayne Tenace of Tenacious Sound told me when I visited his EgglestonWorks and Primare room at AXPONA 2019. Shayne’s known for doing this kind of demonstration–at one of his first trade shows a few years ago he garnered a lot of great press for assembling an awesome $5000 system, built around a $4000 pair of speakers.… Read the full article

Letters to the editor: AXPONA 2019, CDs & electronic music

Mark M. writes in about AXPONA 2019…

Hey John and company,

I read your AXPONA post before attending and you were spot on, not great for critical listening but fantastic for seeing and hearing new equipment normally only seen on screen. This was my first audio show and all I can say is what a great group of people. (Exhibitors, attendees, and staff) The discussion between Steve Guttenberg and Andrew Jones was a good listen and I had a great chat with Scott Mcgowan from PS Audio.… Read the full article

Florida 2019: Mobile Fidelity, Primare, Dr. Feickert, Koestu, Cardas, SolidSteel

By | March 8th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I love me some Bill Evans jazz so this was a really fun room.  Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs is putting out a “One Step” album of his Portrait in Jazz and they had for us listeners an early gift: a MoFi test pressing of the album: Yowza!  The detail and dynamics were fantastic! Beautiful piano timbre.

Loads of bass for a tiny cabinet.

The Falcon “BBC LS3/5a” monitor ($3k) was producing a big sound out of impossibly small monitors on stands.  … Read the full article

Cardas, Mobile Fidelity, Falcon Loudspeakers, Primare, Dr. Fieickert Analogue, Koetsu And A Nautilus Power Strip – Florida 2019

Dr. Fieickert Analogue

I love rooms like the one hosted by Cardas, Mobile Fidelity, Falcon Loudspeakers, Primare, Dr. Fieickert Analogue, Koetsu and Nautilus Power Strip. I know that sounds like a super-sized laundry-list of brand names, but the overall theme of Room No. 502 at the Florida Audio Expo was to “keep it simple.”

Easy to spot from the hallway as I entered the room, in both manner of sight and sound, the Falcon LS3/5a loudspeakers (starting at $2,995 pr USD / $3,250 in Burr Walnut finish as shown)
did well to tackle this small hotel room in terms of giving a full-range impression.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: MoFi, Tenacious Sound and a Whole Lotta Real Estate

By | December 11th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Tenacious Sound, one of my old dealers out of Syracuse, New York, has been busy expanding over the last couple of years–owner Shayne Tenace has moved his base of operation into Augusta, Georgia and has just purchased a store in Jacksonville, Florida. Shayne teamed with industry stalwarts such as Jonathan Derda from MoFi and Lenny Mayeux from Audience to make a big presence at the 2018 Cap[ital Audiofest. Tenacious Sound had a total of eight systems set up in four separate rooms, covering nearly all price points.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Falcon Acoustics, Primare and the Incredible LS3/5a

By | November 13th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

I’m a huge fan of the LS3/5a…are you? If so, you probably know all about Falcon Acoustics, the only manufacturer licensed by the BBC who is continuing to produce the original 15 ohm LS3/5a design in 2018. Falcon, located in Oxford, England, manned three rooms at the 2018 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest—one that featured a simple set-up around their LS3/5a ($2995/pair), a larger room focused around their new tower speaker, the Reference GC6500R ($26,000/pair), and an incredible third room filled with LS3/5as from different makes, vintages, crossovers and impedances.… Read the full article

RMAF 2018: Seeing Stars with Manger, MoFi

By | October 20th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , |

I always love discovering new gear that is musical.  One of the new to me products presented itself in the MoFi Distribution room.  Norbert Schmied and Jonathan Derda outdid themselves with a beautiful sounding pair of Manger S1 Active Loudspeakers ($24,995) paired with a debuting Primare Pre35 Prisma ($4,995) Primare R32 phono stage.  On analog duty was a Dr. Feickert Volare turntable with Origin Live Silver tonearm ($3,495), a new price point for excellent Feickert sound.  Cartridge was the My Sonic Lab Eminent EX MC cartridge ($3,995) and a Little Fwend Automatic Tonearm Lifter High ($249).  … Read the full article

Primare’s Prisma party

By | May 25th, 2017|Categories: DAR|Tags: , , , , |

Scandinavia’s most underrated hifi manufacturer? The case for Sweden’s Primare is strong. Perhaps it’s their products’ understated looks that have kept the brand flying beneath this commentator’s radar until now…

Prisma is the company’s smartphone controlled, network audio platform, one that carries support for Bluetooth, Apple Airplay, Spotify Connect and GoogleCast, and is included in all three products introduced at Munich High-End 2017:

1) The i35 Prisma integrated amplifier (€4500) carries forward the development of Primare’s 30 Series integrated amplifiers and is, according to company representative Terry Madalen, the first to use Primare’s UFPD 2 power system – “a radical reworking” of all-analogue Class-D technology – to net 150wpc into 8 Ohms.… Read the full article
