AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

AXPONA 2019 was a high-end audio show that had a little more meaning for me than usual, probably since the last show I did as an exhibitor was AXPONA 2016. I remember enjoying the 630 mile drive between Rochester and Chicago three years ago, along lakes Ontario and Erie, through states like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. This time was a little tougher than usual since I had just returned from Hawaii the day before, thanks to Hawaiian Airlines’ new eleven-hour non-stop flight from Honolulu to JFK.… Read the full article

MoFi, Wharfedale and Quad | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten excited over a so-called “budget” component, which is why the MoFi, Wharfedale and Quad room at AXPONA 2019 was such a unexpected surprise. I visited Jonathan Derda and the multiple set-ups and he was commandeering for MoFi–I walked in just when another industry person told him “You guys at MoFi are getting all the good brands!” MoFi has featured Quad and Wharfedale for quite a few years, and I’m quite familiar with most of the products from these two venerable British manufacturers.… Read the full article

Florida 2019: House of Stereo, Wolf Audio Systems, TAD, Wireworld

House of Stereo brings retail sensibility to a small room, Wolf Audio Systems takes us back to the future, TAD (Technical Audio Devices) puts a fine point on detail, Ayre Acoustics continues to build a legacy, and Wireworld straps us in for a wild ride.

TAD (Technical Audio Devices) speakers almost seem to be a draw unto themselves. Several show goers I spoke to in the hallways remarked about listening to the TAD Micro Evolution 1’s in the House of Stereo room.… Read the full article

CAF 2018: MoFi, Tenacious Sound and a Whole Lotta Real Estate

By | December 11th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Tenacious Sound, one of my old dealers out of Syracuse, New York, has been busy expanding over the last couple of years–owner Shayne Tenace has moved his base of operation into Augusta, Georgia and has just purchased a store in Jacksonville, Florida. Shayne teamed with industry stalwarts such as Jonathan Derda from MoFi and Lenny Mayeux from Audience to make a big presence at the 2018 Cap[ital Audiofest. Tenacious Sound had a total of eight systems set up in four separate rooms, covering nearly all price points.… Read the full article

McIntosh’s New MC462 Quad Balanced Power Amplifier

By | July 2nd, 2018|Categories: Audiohead|Tags: , , , , , , |

While it hasn’t been that long since McIntosh warmed up the airwaves with a new product release, it might still feel like its been a little too long for diehard fans. Now, on the market is a replacement for the MC452 power stereo amplifier. The new MC462 ($9k) boasts increased filter capacity of 50%, 66% more dynamic headroom and new LEDs on the front panel for better color accuracy of those bopping blue meters.

You can check out all of the rest of the updates to the classic amp in the presser below.… Read the full article

Quad QA12/P Amplifier

This is pretty close to Quads first amplifier. I got to put my hands on one of these once very cool early British amplifiers.

Capital Audiofest 2017: Tenacious Sound, exhibits with tenacity

By | November 20th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

“Trusting your ears can save you a lot of money.” That’s my version of an old audiophile chestnut. Today this philosophy was proven true by Shayne Tenace of Tenacious Sound. One of the best showcases at Capital Audiofest was a trio of Shayne’s rooms featuring varying levels of refinement and cost. The two rooms of lesser prerequisite financial means were directly in my crosshairs.

Imagine just three components; an Naim All-in-One (streamer/DAC/amp), a pair of TAD bookshelf monitors, and some seriously divine Black Cat cables.… Read the full article

Capital Audiofest 2017: Old Meets New with EMIA

By | November 14th, 2017|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , |

Meet EMIA Audio, an informal coupling of Experienced Music and Intact Audio (hence EMIA), two companies whose principals decided to informally join forces to make great music. Much of what these guys are doing involves melding older designs with newer technology. Their creations seem mainly to be bespoke, one-off pieces, focusing mainly on restoration and re-builds based on classic turntables and their accessories, as well as newly designed step-up transformers and phono stages.

The EMIA room was chock-full of really cool looking gear with a vintage vibe, along with some crazy stuff that would make Dr.… Read the full article
