Quintessence Audio | AXPONA 2019

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by the LSA Group

Quintessence Audio makes up half of the floor space under the escalators at AXPONA, opposite two rooms which Paragon takes, both in a prime space.  Usually they have three great rooms and this year was no different.  But before we talk about the rooms, I have to tell you about their customer service.  I was helping a friend of mine buy some premium speakers and Quintessence really delivered excellent service taking into account some very specific challenges by the owner and the music room the system was going in.  … Read the full article

FLORIDA 2019 – Sumiko Analog, Pro-Ject, Sonus Faber, Pangea Audio

ES000186

Pro-Ject was on site demonstrating the EISA-award-winning combination of Roon-enabled network endpoint (StreamBox S2 Ultra) and MQA capable DAC (PreBox S2 Digital) with two sets on hand for listening. In addition to the streaming and digital products, they were showing their higher performance RPM-series turntable, and Sonus Faber Guaneri Homage loudspeakers.

For myself it’s the PreBox S2 Digital that is and should be all the rage. A small, 5V driven stereo DAC / Preamplifier box, with a built-in headphone amplifier. It’s spec’d out in ways, that I almost consider it a portable device as well, despite its intended design for desktop or audiophile rack based systems.… Read the full article

Florida 2019: A Critical Eye II

By | February 22nd, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

by Paul Elliott

I thought the show really very good.  Run very professionally, far better than a “first effort”.  I can only hope they can muster the energy to do it again next year. All the exhibitors I talked to had only good things to say about how well this show was run.  The show had the same good vibe that is often attributed to Gary Gill and Capital Audiofest. There was really a great cross-section of large and small audio companies, even a couple of guys just showing off what they built to get a public reading for possible production.

Sumiko updates cartridge line with six new models

Sumiko-presser

Sumiko launch six new carts.

Longtime Japanese moving-magnet, and moving-coil cartridge manufacturer Sumiko has announced a full-scale assault on the state of their art with six new pick-ups being launched. Having heard their Blue Point No.2 , and Blackbird cartridges extensively over the years on a variety of ‘tables, I can say without hubris that this is a company that does not short-change resolution for warmth. Their designs cover a broad spectrum of price ranges so that anyone wanting to get into high-end sound without breaking the bank can do just that.… Read the full article

Review: The Pro-Ject RPM 9 Carbon turntable with Sumiko Blackbird

Pro-Ject-RPM9Carbon-Featured

Reflecting on the Pro-Ject RPM 9.

Playing records is – as my good friend once told me – the audiophile version of the Japanese tea ceremony. It is all about preparation, and presentation. There is a strong visual aesthetic to the act of putting an LP on a turntable, cueing up the tonearm, and dropping the needle into the groove. If you’re not sure of how to do it, it shows, and you lose some of the inherent grace, intelligence and sophistication that having a turntable, and a record collection, connotes in many people’s minds.… Read the full article

System-August-2017

Front wall: Current gear in for review along with my personal Audio Note UK kit.

2017 is rocketing past us, and with the summer at its nadir I thought it was time for a quick update on what’s happening with me up north here on the Best Coast in Vancouver. I’ve moved into a new place that is much larger than my previous one to accommodate the growing list of gear making its way to my door, and so my son could live with with me while going to university (most importantly).… Read the full article

EP-2.8 loudspeakers.

There always are a number of mini-trends going on at any one time in the high-end. Lately, some of those have includes tape decks, vibration-control devices and integrated amps.

Among speaker manufacturers, the open-baffle concept has been on the rise. Having one or more drivers operating without being sealed in a box is hardly a new idea. But, most of the items mentioned above have long histories as well.

Some early loudspeakers used this basic design. Today’s engineers, however, are thinking up new ways to implement it.… Read the full article

MC601 mono blocks in effect.

World of McIntosh is a brand name developed in 2015 by the longtime manufacturer’s parent company, Fine Sounds Group. Audiophiles who haven’t been paying close attention may be surprised to learn just how big that world is.

McIntosh, which was founded in 1949, for many decades has offered a fairly large catalog of electronics and speakers. But as it has gone through a series of acquisitions and corporate moves, it has become part of a larger family with numerous sister companies.… Read the full article
