2L Recordings’ Himmelborgen | The Vinyl Anachronist

By | August 4th, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

2L RecordingsHimmelborgen consists of three very familiar elements–pipe organ, choir and church. Yes, hymns are being sung. This beautiful recording should remind you of being in church on an early Sunday morning, provided you belong to a large and popular church that has a big enough budget to hire a top-notch musical director and gifted musicians. Of course, being in Norway has something to do with this experience since everything is sung in that language. But 2L Recordings is not a typical record label, and Himmelborgen as far from an ordinary church service.… Read the full article

Marc’s Wrap Up | T.H.E. Show 2019

After T.H.E. Show 2019, I did something that I should have done at High-End 2019 in Munich–I stayed a couple of extra days after the show ended. A good friend of mine called me just the other day and asked me how Munich was, mentioning how exciting it was that I finally made it to Europe after all these years. The truth is, I should have lingered for a few more days, maybe a week. Six weeks later, Munich was a blur in my mind like I never really went.… Read the full article

The Voice That Is! Presents John Marks, Zesto Audio and Bricasti Design

I went almost thirty years without traveling back to the Philadelphia area where I once lived, but now thanks to Doug White and The Voice That Is! I’ve been there twice this month. Just three weeks ago I covered Doug’s event for Vertere Acoustics, and Colleen and I had a wonderful time meeting analog legend Touraj Moghaddam of Vertere and meeting up with fellow Part-Time Audiophile writer Richard H. Mak so we could learn more about his analog set-up software, AnalogMagik.… Read the full article

Vertere, Wilson, GoldNote, Rutherford | T.H.E. Show 2019

By | June 22nd, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

If you’re waiting for my Sunday’s Highlight post for T.H.E. Show 2019 to follow up Friday and Saturday, there isn’t one. You probably haven’t noticed yet, but Eric Franklin Shook and I took on the daunting task of covering an entire high-end audio show between the two of us. Every. Single. Room. I think we did it, but not at the cost of quality over quantity. That means we were up to our necks in audio on Sunday, and the next two days of my life were spent relaxing and having a great time in Los Angeles with good friends and decompressing.… Read the full article

The Voice That Is! Presents Vertere Acoustics

Dealer events and audiophile society meetings can be tricky when they’re held in hotel conference rooms–I know because I did my share of them over the last few years. These rooms tend to be big, with high ceilings, and they’re not exactly designed for acoustics. Usually you have a limited time for set-up, and you often panic about the way everything sounds until the crowd wanders in and everything sounds much better thanks to all those pliant, warm bodies in the seats.… Read the full article

High-End 2019 show coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

Spotting a pair of Tidal Audio speakers out in the wild is rare enough–these fascinating transducers from Germany redefine the art of speaker design in so many ways, something that keeps them far from mainstream exposure and ubiquity. I’ve reported on a few high-end audio trade showrooms over the last few months that have used Tidal Audio speakers, and the sound has never been less than a stunning and effortless display of ultimate resolution.… Read the full article

Eric’s Best of Show | AXPONA 2019

EFS AXPONA 2019

CHICAGO (PTA) — Despite the sometimes overwhelming size that shows like AXPONA 2019 portray, for me this exhibition still represents the largest collection of small businesses I have ever seen under one roof. Most of the exhibitors are indeed “mom-and-pop shops”. Most of these audio companies have only five to seven key employees, and often with a single figurehead wearing five of the most crucial hats within that company. Those being: the money, the designer, the face, the communicator, and the boss.Read the full article

AXPONA 2019 Weiss

AXPONA 2019 Show Coverage brought to you by Core Power Technologies

If you are a mastering engineer or have recorded an album in a world-class studio within the last thirty-five years, you are likely quite familiar with the work of Daniel Weiss. If your roots are instead more limited to the world of hi-fi, you should have come across a piece or two of Weiss Engineering‘s high-end hi-fi products somewhere over the last twenty years. At AXPONA 2019, Doug White of The Voice That Is!Read the full article

The Voice That Is presents Vertere Acoustics

By | March 21st, 2019|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , |

For our US readers in Pensylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey — mark your calendars.

Doug White, of The Voice That Is, in cooperation with the Philadelphia Area Audio Group and the New Jersey Audio Society, will host a vinyl event featuring Vertere Acoustics and Touraj Moghaddam, Designer.

The topics of discussion will be analog reproduction, turntable and tonearm design.  A short listening session will follow.

Touraj Moghaddam made his name in hi-fi circles as one of the two founders of the UK’s Roksan Audio, which began making turntables just when LPs were facing decline following the arrival of the CD in the mid-1980s.

CAF 2018: Bricasti, Tidal and the Last Word in Inner Detail

By | November 28th, 2018|Categories: Part-Time Audiofile|Tags: , , , , , , , |

When Eric Franklin Shook and I arrived at the 2018 Capital Audiofest, we decided to mix up the coverage so that neither of us would be covering the same rooms as we did at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest just a few weeks before. I did regret that I wouldn’t have another shot at spending time with those Vimberg speakers from The Voice That Is, but I was relieved when I walked into the big Bricasti room and saw a drop-dead-gorgeous pair of Tidal Audio Contriva Diacera speakers.… Read the full article
